Year 10 Course

This page contains an overview of the structure of your Year 10 course.
This includes what is happening when and deadlines.

Autumn Term i
COMPOSITION - CORE SKILLS 1
During this half term the focus is on developing your composition skills. During this term you will be developing your understanding and skills in relation to two Areas of Study:
RHYTHM & METER and HARMONY & TONALITY.
You will begin to look at the five Areas Of Study that are at the heart of the GCSE course.
Most of this composing work will be created using Garageband to record your ideas, either through playing the keyboard or through recording live audio (guitars, vocals, wind instruments etc.)

SEQUENCING & PRODUCTION SKILLS
You will also be developing your sequencing and music production skills using Garageband. This will include learning how to create new instrument tracks; copying, pasting and deleting "regions", working with quantisation and building arrangements. You will also learn how to add audio to your Garageband projects - guitars, vocals etc.

PERFORMANCE
You will also get the opportunity to explore composing skills through performance, working in groups. During these lessons you may be rehearsing/performing on your main instrument, but you will also get the opportunity to play other instruments.
There will usually be one lesson a week devoted to performance.

Autumn Term ii

You will also be exploring how to create a great sounding final mix; using FX processing, adding automation and exporting your creations as an MP3 file.

You will continue to have one lesson a week for Performance work. This half term you will work on cover versions, which you will perform to the class towards the end of the half term, just before Christmas.

COMPOSITION - UNIT 4
During this half term you will begin to work on your Unit 4 composition - you will have a maximum of 20 hours controlled time in which to complete this composition. This is an important piece of your GCSE course and is worth 20% of the whole course.
Some of this will be completed in class time but you will have to work on your compositions outside of class time too if you want to produce high quality work.
You will complete a composition log throughout this term to help you to produce the written work which must accompany the Unit 4 submissions.
The Deadline for the first draft of the Unit 4 composition is:
FRIDAY 27TH JANUARY 2012.
Your work will then be marked and you will be given detailed feedback on how to finalise the composition and achieve the best possible grade.

PERFORMANCE
You will continue to have a lesson a week dedicated to performance work but this term will focus on the different aspects of the mark scheme for the Group Performance (Part of Unit 3). This work will give you a detailed insight into what is required to get the best possible marks in your group work.
